The Poorhouse Story

The Poorhouse Story calls itself "a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American Poorhouses." The poorhouse was the lowest rung on the ladder of society—a place where, when you had to go there, they had to take you in (to horribly misappropriate a Robert Frost line). A brainchild of "Poorhouse Lady" Linda Crannell, the website has a history of the poorhouse, articles, and links to scanned documents and other resources organized by state. Sadly, there are only three names listed in the Famous People in the Poorhouse section—two who stopped by on their way up, one on her way down.
